The United Nations(UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Sign Language Translation
The United Nations(UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an international convention which defines the most basic principles, such as non-discrimination, equality of opportunity, full and effective participation in society in order to ensure full and equal access to all human rights for persons with disabilities.
Turkey has ratified and became a party to the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2009. Under the Convention, State parties are obliged to raise social awareness about persons with disabilities. Translation of the Convention into sign language, as well as other accessible formats, is part of this obligation. Unfortunately, it has not been translated into sign language by the responsible authorities in the last 10 years.
UN Committee of Rights of Persons with Disabilities, has recommended that the Convention be translated into sign language, in paragraph 70 of the Concluding Observations of Turkey’s First Reporting Period. Our Association has translated the summary of the Convention into sign language, in order to inform persons with hearing impairments about the Convention as well as raising awareness. The reason for the summary translation of the Convention, is due to the word limitation of Turkish sign language. The sign language translation of the Convention can be found in the video above.
