International Conference on Access to Justice
Strengthening Access to Justice for Disadvantaged Groups
As part of the project on “Strengthening Access to Justice for Disadvantaged Groups,” which is being supported by The European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights by the EU Delegation to Turkey, the Association for Monitoring for Equal Rights (AMER) will host an international conference on Disadvantaged Groups’ Access to Justice on 22-23 October 2022. The conference will be hosted in partnership with the Union of Turkish Bar Associations and Atılım University.
Access to justice can refer to the prohibition of discrimination, empowering groups at risk, and supporting the freedom to seek justice, as well as the right to a fair trial in international human rights law. Access to justice is not only about legal aid, legal advice, or physical access. It is also related to whether disadvantaged groups have equal access to these rights and services. There are limited academic studies on access to justice. The legal framework of access to justice and how it can be implemented in practice have not been sufficiently discussed in Turkey.
We invite you to submit a paper to our conference, which will include academics, lawyers, experts, and activists from local and international institutions. The aim will be to discuss the policies, legislation, and practical problems related to access to justice for disadvantaged groups in Turkey, as well as for participants to share their experiences and consider best practices concerning access to justice in different countries.
The main topics of the conference include but are not limited to the following:
- Discrimination and the right to equal access to justice,
- Rights violations experienced by disadvantaged groups in accessing justice and possible solutions,
- Legal capacity in the context of right-seeking processes for disadvantaged groups,
- The right to equal recognition and protection before the law,
- Evaluation of national and international legislation related to access to justice,
- Evaluation of the effects of applications made to national and international human rights mechanisms for disadvantaged groups,
- Problems, solution proposals, and examples of good practice regarding the access to justice for disadvantaged groups in Turkey,
- Legal clinic method and global examples of strengthening access to justice,
- The effect of technological developments on access to justice.
The solution proposals presented at the end of the conference will be shared with the relevant institutions and organizations.
Papers submitted to the conference cannot be under evaluation in any other venue such as journals, congresses, conferences, etc., and should constitute original work that has not been published in any type of media before. Each paper proposal will be evaluated by at least two referees. Acceptance of the paper proposal by at least two referees is a prerequisite for admission to the conference.
A scientific committee consisting of academics who are experts in their fields has been formed for the evaluation of the paper proposals. The submitted proposals will be sent to the members of the scientific committee, and the identities of the paper authors will not be seen by the referees. After the conference, the authors of the papers will be requested to send the full paper that they have prepared for publication, and the papers that will be chosen by the editors will be included in the conference book.
Details regarding the conference location and program will be announced in the coming days, and accommodation will be provided free of charge for the authors of the papers accepted.
The conference will be held in both Turkish and English. Simultaneous translation services will be provided.
